Aquinas’ discussion of ‘the last things’ draws on prophecies found in the New Testament and other apocalyptic texts interpreted in a substantially literal form. The focus falls initially on the signs of impending judgement and Christ’s return in power and glory—signs in the heavens, distress of nations, roaring seas, and the Son of Man coming on a cloud (Luke 22:25–7; cf. Matt 24:3ff). Among the signs is a great conflagration, announced in the second letter attributed to Peter, but probably written around 150 CE:But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless … The day of the Lord will come like a thief … the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire. But in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. (II Peter, 3:7–13)
